Vans x Gallery Dept.

In 1966, in a small workshop in Anaheim, California, Paul Van Doren laid the foundations for what would become one of the most influential brands in skate culture. With his associates, he revolutionized the industry by selling his shoes directly from his workshop, without intermediaries. On the first day, twelve pairs of Vans Authentic left the factory, sold for $2.49 each.

This direct producer-to-consumer approach immediately forged the brand's DNA: authenticity, proximity, and artisanal quality. The waffle rubber sole, Vans' technical signature, offered revolutionary grip that quickly seduced the first skaters on the West Coast.

Technical Evolution: From Craftsmanship to Innovation

The 1970s marked a decisive turning point with the introduction of the Old Skool in 1977, the first Vans silhouette to integrate the now-iconic lateral stripe. This side stripe, imagined by Paul Van Doren himself, instantly became the brand's visual symbol and structurally reinforced the shoe.

Technical innovation didn't stop there. Vulcanized construction, a complex process that bonds the sole to the upper by high temperature, guarantees exceptional durability against the rigours of skateboarding. This artisanal method, more costly than simple gluing, partly explains the legendary resilience of Vans.

Our current collection reflects this ongoing evolution, with models like the Vans Knu Skool Black White that reinterprets classic codes with a contemporary approach, or the Old Skool 36 LX Souvenir Warm Brown that pushes the premium experience into new territories.

Landmark Collaborations and Special Editions

Vans quickly understood the importance of creative collaborations in maintaining cultural relevance. As early as the 1980s, the brand partnered with artists, musicians, and creators to produce limited editions that instantly became collectible pieces.

These partnerships transcend the simple product to become true artistic manifestos. The Gallery Dept "Art That Kills" collaboration perfectly exemplifies this approach, fusing the raw aesthetic of contemporary streetwear with Vans' skate heritage.

Premium series like the La Habana collection testify to this constant search for exclusivity. Our Vans Premium Authentic La Habana Red Navy, Green Blue, and Black White offer sophisticated colorways that elevate the classic Authentic into more luxurious territory.

Cultural Impact: Beyond Skateboarding

While Vans was born in the skateboarding universe, the brand quickly transcended its original domain to invest in all facets of alternative culture. Music, art, fashion: Vans became the symbol of a certain American counter-culture that influences the world.

This cultural expansion materialized in initiatives like the Vans Warped Tour, touring festivals that popularized punk and hardcore music. Vans then became the unofficial uniform of generations of musicians and fans, creating a strong identification between product and lifestyle.

Today, this influence endures through innovative approaches like the Pearlized Pack that reinterprets the Old Skool with pearlized finishes, or the Marshmallow colorway that plays with textures and chromatic contrasts.

Vans and the French Scene

Vans' adoption by the French scene perfectly illustrates the brand's ability to transcend cultural boundaries. From the first Paris skaters to suburban rappers, passing through independent fashion designers, Vans established itself as a universal language of authenticity.

This influence is reflected in our streetwear selection, where Vans naturally dialogues with other cultural references to create a coherent and personal wardrobe.

Vans Today: Heritage and Innovation

Contemporary Vans skillfully navigates between respecting its heritage and the necessity for innovation. Classic silhouettes like the Authentic and Old Skool remain unchanged in their essential proportions, guaranteeing the visual continuity that makes the brand's strength.

In parallel, technical and aesthetic developments allow exploration of new territories without betraying the original DNA. This philosophy is found in every model in our collection, carefully selected to represent Vans excellence in all its forms.
